Based on her forthcoming monograph, Visualising the Mediterranean: Unlearning and
Imagining through Contemporary Art (Liverpool University Press), Amanda Tavares shares
theoretical reflections on key concepts from Caribbean philosopher Édouard Glissant,
such as the ‘right to opacity’, ‘archipelagic thinking’, and the ‘trace’. She shows how
opacity can be a positive ethical value for dealing with Otherness, going against modes of
objectification and assimilation, and instead sustaining differences and interactions. She
also situates ‘traces’ as both the result of violent and damaging acts of erasure, and as
proof of continuous, indirect and generative modes of resistance.
Tavares puts these concepts to work in a detailed analysis of stazione (2008-2009), a
proposed urban intervention by Emily Jacir whose goal was to expose and affirm the
influence of Arab culture in Venice’s architectural and social landscape. Tavares argues
that the artwork points to the ways in which ‘invisible’ cultural elements can—and have—
shaped a collective imaginary of Venice that is transhistorical and multicultural. Looking at
how the artist worked around unpredictable constraints, she demonstrates the importance
of not reducing endurance to visible forms or linear temporalities, and to consider
belonging and heritage as processes that should avoid conceptual dichotomies and be
constantly negotiated.

After Amanda Tavares’ presentation, Marta Padovan-Özdemir will moderate an open
discussion.

Amount per diem: 201€/day, max. 3 days participation (plus two travel days) + flight reimbursed (rate average 400€).
Objective: Each presentation has the duration of 10 min. The WG leaders should also present 10 min the progress of the WG in Cost year #2.
Deliverables: Data Collection of WG members in our visits to the artisans. Posterior systematisation of collected data for website update.

Criteria of selection of grantees/trainees/WG member participation: the contributions should most closely reflect the objectives of our COST Action, namely:
present a case study of circular practices that are based on:
-creative, artistic, experimental and innovative circular solutions.
- present in a clear way methodologies of promoting circularity in a certain environment
- create a bridge between European and non-European practices OR present case-studies from non-European environments (focus: Africa and Latin America - overall focuses of our project)-
- consider ancestral practices that can be now revitalised.

The 1st CIRCUL'ARTs Global Meeting (1st Station) will take place between 8th -10th of September 2025 in Paris at Fondation Maison de Science de l'Homme (conferences) and at Casa da America Latina (Film Program and Conversations).
